• The 2024 Honda Prologue is the company’s second electric car (E.V.) for sale in the U.S. It will cost between $45K and $50K to buy as a base model.
  • The Prologue is offered with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The latter has a range of up to 300 miles, 288 horsepower, and 333 pound-feet of torque.
  • Honda designers in Los Angeles made the Prologue’s beautiful exterior and intelligent interior. The car is built on G.M.’s Ultium platform.

Who is familiar with the Honda Clarity E.V.? Most people won’t agree with you. The strange-looking automobile was the brand’s most recent attempt to sell an electric car in the U.S.. Still, it didn’t work out because it only had an estimated range of 89 miles and could only be leased in California and Oregon. With the 2024 Prologue, Honda is back in the American E.V. race thanks to G.M.’s scalable Ultium battery tech.

The first sneak peek

The Prologue is 192 inches long, three inches longer than the mid-size Honda Passport, and slightly longer than the small Honda CR-V. The electric SUV also has a long wheelbase of 121.8 inches, which is the same as the Acura ZDX and helps make the inside of the car roomy. The Prologue looks like a station wagon because it is more comprehensive than it is tall (64.7 inches), just like the Ford Flex, which is no longer made.

Honda’s design team in Los Angeles made the Prologue, which has few overhangs and smooth surfaces on the outside. It looks great, even though its simple design isn’t as exciting as anything new with a Kia or Hyundai name. The 21-inch wheels on the top-of-the-line model make it look even more significant.

The inside of the Prologue looks good, too, thanks to its simple design and good choice of materials. We like the column-mounted shifter and the adjustable center console, which has large cupholders that can hold 32-ounce containers and a lot of storage room between the upper and lower levels, as well as buttons and knobs you can feel.

We got to see plenty of space in both rows of the Prologue. Even so, taller people in the back seats will need more space, especially in models with the panoramic sunroof. There are 25 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats, which lean back slightly. When the seatbacks are pulled down, 58 cubes of space are created. Under the floor of the cargo area is an extra storage cube. There is no trunk because of where the front electric motor is kept.

A brief look at powertrains and batteries

The Prologue can come with either a single motor that drives the front wheels or two engines that move all four wheels. 333 pound-feet of torque and 288 horsepower are thought to come from the latter. Honda hasn’t said how much power the single electric motor has, but based on the front-drive Chevy Equinox E.V., which shares a frame with the Prologue, it has around 210 horsepower and 243 pound-feet. No matter what engine you have, acceleration and deceleration are reflected by noises. It needs to be clarified whether these noises make driving better or worse.

Honda thinks the front-drive Prologue, which will have an 85.0 kWh battery pack, can go up to 300 miles on a single charge. There is no estimate for the all-wheel-drive cars, but it will be the same as the 280-mile range of the Equinox E.V.

When hooked up to a D.C. fast charger at a maximum rate of 155 kW, the Prologue’s battery should add 65 miles of range in 10 minutes. Customers can also pick from three different ways to charge their devices. Both come with a $100 credit for setting up at a public place and a $500 bonus for installation. It has a home charger with 11.5 kW and a travel charger with 7.6 kW. A $750 credit for public costs is the third choice.

A look at the features and prices

There are three trim options for the Prologue. They are EX, Touring, and Elite. Even the least expensive model comes with heated front seats, a power driver’s seat with back support, climate control for two zones, and a way to charge your phone wirelessly. When you upgrade to the Touring, you get leather seats, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, and a rearview mirror that automatically dims. The Elite has a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and different types of perforated leather.

All models have a basic touchscreen infotainment system with an 11.3-inch horizontal display and a digital gauge cluster with an 11.0-inch display. The second one has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Google software and a wide range of apps. In addition to all that technology, each Prologue has several driver aids, such as rear cross-traffic braking, back pedestrian detection, and blind-spot steering help.

Honda hasn’t said how much the 2024 Prologue will cost yet, but the EX model will likely cost between $45,000 and $50,000. Most likely, the top-tier Elite will add another $10,000. Before the end of the year, people will be able to buy the electric SUV, and sales will start in early 2024.
