The Autozam AZ-1, the Honda Beat, and the iconic Suzuki Cappuccino, all left an indelible mark on Japan’s automotive scene in the 1990s. The Cappuccino, a nimble and lightweight racer, was often compared to the Mazda Miata, a car that seemed massive in comparison. Recent reports from Japanese news outlets suggest that the Suzuki Cappuccino is poised for a comeback, ready to challenge the Mazda MX-5 once again. This potential revival of a classic rivalry is certainly something to look forward to.

This idea, which came from Best Car, says that Toyota’s supposed plan to compete with Mazda with the S-FR roadster is linked to the Cappuccino’s comeback. Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu were said to be working on a racing car as early as 2019. The plan was to switch from a car with a mid-engine to a classic car with a front engine. Toyota could make three cars, one for each brand, like the GR86 and GR Supra. The Suzuki would be a hot, brand-new Cappuccino, the Daihatsu would be a brand-new Copen roadster, and the Toyota would be the S-FR. But take a second look because one of the main changes that is said to be coming to this old Suzuki is its size.

With Toyota’s help, the Suzuki Cappuccino goes back to battle the Miata: Report

Because the S-FR is going to be a straight competitor to the MX-5, even in terms of size, the Cappuccino will no longer be thought of as a kei car. It is also likely that the 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine from the GR Corolla, which makes about 150 horsepower and 160 lb-ft of torque, will be added. The GR Starlet hot hatch is also thought to have this engine, but it would power the back wheels of the Cappuccino instead of the front wheels of the hatchback, as was first thought. Even though the transmission numbers aren’t clear, there will likely be both an automatic and a six-speed manual.

This updated Suzuki icon is likely to compete with its triplet siblings when it comes out in 2027. If everything goes as planned, it won’t have as much power as the current Mazda MX-5, which has 181 horsepower. The next one is a hybrid. However, because it only has a combustion engine, some people might like it better than the MX-5, especially if the engine needs as much boost as the 1.6-liter engine in the GR Corolla. Since Suzuki cars aren’t sold in the US, the only other choice would be a Toyota-based car. Still, it would be great if this famous name came back to life.
