How do you like to drive the Silverado 1500? We looked at the High Country trim of a Silverado crew cab with four-wheel drive and a 5.3-liter V8 engine. The brakes and acceleration are good enough for daily driving or towing. Our test truck went from 0 to 60 mph in about 7 seconds on our test track. The Silverado has plenty of power, but an F-150 with the same specs is a bit faster. The transmission makes the engine’s low-end power stronger while driving in town. 

Even though the turning isn’t very heavy, the car stays straight on the highway. It is possible to control body roll while making turns, and handling is safe. But mid-corner bumps quickly make the Silverado unhappy. Are you going off-road? A regular 4WD Silverado will do, but to get the most out of it, you should consider getting the Trail Boss trim level or the Z71 off-road option package.

How much comfort does the Silverado 1500 offer? The Silverado’s seats are less nice than those in the F-150 or Ram 1500, but they’re comfortable and supportive enough for long trips. The ride is smooth on the highway, and the car can handle most small bumps. It might get bumpy, though, if you drive on roads with lots of dips and bumps. 

The temperature system easily heats and cools the house, but many of the control buttons are small, which makes them a bit hard to use. We really like that only GM offers ventilated and split-heated front seats with a seatback and pillow that can be adjusted. The engine noise is well-controlled up until you apply a lot of throttle; beyond that point, it becomes mildly annoying.

How is the inside? Chevrolet has finally given Silverado owners the long-awaited change to the inside. The newest cabin design feels and looks a lot more modern than the one used for 2019–2021 cars. The ZR2 trim has more athletic elements, and the High Country and other high-end trims use more luxurious materials. Most of the settings are easy to use, which was a feature of the previous version. This is because the buttons are big and clear, and the touchscreen is quick. 

Because it has a crew cab, the Silverado has a lot of space for people. The generous legroom is most noticeable in the rear seat. Some types are raised, but wide doorways and strategically placed chairs make them easier to access.

How does the tech work? Technology is one of the best things about the Silverado. A 13.4-inch touchscreen that is easy to use gives you a lot of options without being too hard to understand, and the high-resolution screen answers quickly to clicks and swipes. The navigation makes it easy to find places and things of interest, and the maps are easy to read. The Google-powered speech recognition technology can also help you understand spoken language and read back your instructions on the screen. You can change the stations, change the temperature, and do other things with your words. 

Our test car was equipped with wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. With CarPlay, the big screen looked great. Your phone has its own storage space, and some types come with a wireless charger. Numerous external cameras are available and can be helpful when parking this huge car. The rear cross-traffic alert system and the useful buzzers in the seat bottom also work very well. 

When it comes to big vehicles, adaptive cruise control is usually reliable.  While the system was on, our test truck occasionally lurched forward in stop-and-go traffic. To stop this, our driver had to quickly apply the brakes, which took away from an otherwise nice experience. GM’s hands-free driving assistance feature, Super Cruise, can only be used on the most expensive High Country model. Ford’s BlueCruise system is similar, and it comes on a number of F-150 trims.

How are the moving and storage going? We tested a short-bed 4WD crew-cab truck with a 5.3-liter V8 engine and regular 3.23 axle gears. Our current setup gives us enough pulling and hauling power. The bed is a little bigger, deeper, and longer than the others on the market, and it has more tie-downs. 

The F-150 and Ram 1500’s center consoles can be used for more than one purpose, while the Silverado’s center console is boxy and has several sections. The crew cab’s back seat has three places for child safety seats. The back seat has three top tethers and two sets of bottom car seat anchors for family use. But because the car is so high, it might be hard to load the seats, let alone the kids.

How much fuel does it use? We tried a Silverado High Country with a 5.3-liter V8 engine and 4WD. It gets 17 mpg in the city and on the highway, which is easy to find in the real world. The Silverado’s available six-cylinder diesel engine uses the least gas.

How much does a 1500 Silverado cost? The Silverado is reasonably priced, but it costs more than its key rivals while not providing any additional benefits in features, style, or interior quality. The plastics and buttons on the panel are the same as on the last model; they’re strong but not very attractive. The first service is free, but Chevy’s guarantee coverage could be better.

It’s only sometimes fun to drive a full-size truck like the Silverado. The Silverado, on the other hand, might make you smile with its strong front-end styling, impressive towing power, and commanding appearance on the road. On the other hand, the inside is very old-fashioned, with many items and style choices from different times. That being said, it might not be the full-size truck you’re looking for.

The Silverado 1500 offers buyers nine different styles and four engines. Many people will choose the intermediate LT over the base Work Truck because it has a much nicer interior and doesn’t have all-terrain functionality or unnecessary luxury features.
