2025 BMW X5 Overview

What’s new:

  • With Highway Assistant, you don’t have to use your hands to change roads.
  • Small changes were made to the tools and packaging.
  • A part of the fourth-generation X5 that will be released in 2019.

Performance, grace, and usefulness are the three best words to describe the 2025 BMW X5. This midsize luxury SUV is fun to drive, well-made with good materials, and has a roomy trunk that can fit more than 70 cubic feet of stuff or five people. It’s great in terms of basic features. You could choose the M60i’s turbocharged V8 engine for more power, or you could go with the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid for better fuel economy. The X5 you choose will meet your wants for a high-end SUV.

An electric SUV from BMW called the X5 xDrive50e can go about 40 miles on power alone. The xDrive50e is said to get 22 to 23 mpg after the gasoline engine starts. It costs $5,100 more than a regular X5 xDrive40i to get this engine, but you get more than drive it electric. Since it has 108 more horsepower, the X5 xDrive50e should be able to hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, while the xDrive40i, which has 375 horsepower, will need 5.3 seconds. Does the extra price for the X5 plug-in hybrid make sense? If you plug it in every night to charge the battery, the answer may be yes in the long run. However, the process of drawing the numbers with a pencil will take some time.

The Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, and Volvo XC90 are all two- and three-row midsize SUVs that compete with this one. All but the Audi have plug-in electric drivetrains. The BMW and Mercedes are the most alike when it comes to price, size, features, and choices.

What do they like to live with?

The 2020 BMW X5 was put through a lot of tests, and we found that life with the SUV was enjoyable. The BMW X5 has changed a lot since then, but the newest models are still from the same generation as our long-term test car, so a lot of what we learned applies to the 2025 model.

Pros

  • The engines that were sent worked very well.
  • The price is well worth it for the large and cozy house.
  • Large cargo room and interior.

Cons

  • Huge roof beams and small mirrors can make blind spots.
  • There is not enough space for storage.
  • It’s hard to get in and out of a room with wide doorways.

How does the X5’s drive feel? We looked at the plug-in hybrid X5 xDrive 50e. The hybrid engine makes a huge amount of torque that stays the same. You’ll be pushed back far enough in your seat. Our X5 went from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds on our test track. Besides that, you will get handling that is almost amazing for something so big. There is so much good stuff here, and the mild torque makes driving around feel even more luxurious. The brakes work well when you need to stop fast.

Additionally, BMW has mixed this hybrid technology with a smooth inline-six engine, so when you need the most power, all you get is smooth acceleration. It’s not shaky or noisy, and the engine’s sound is nice.

How well does the X5 fit your body? It may have the best performance numbers in its class, but comfort is not sacrificed. The X5 is so calm, quiet, and nice on the road that it almost shocks you. Think of the X5 as the outside of your home. The SUV’s big wheels might be its biggest problem. Smaller wheels with softer sidewalls would be able to handle almost any road condition. This is because bigger wheels tend to bring more road irregularities into the car.

The seats can be adjusted in many ways and have beautiful leather or faux leather coverings. We do think, though, that the temperature control system could still be improved. It is hard to use, and the fans are too loud and weak for a car that costs this much.

How is the inside? One big problem with the X5’s interior is that the buttons are hard to use. The majority of them are hidden under choices on the infotainment display, making it impossible to find what you’re looking for without going through a huge number of apps and pages.    The learning curve will be too steep for some, but those who put in the work will benefit from the rest of the house.

The chairs are very comfy, and there is a lot of space for your head and legs. There is enough room for five people, and the windows and sides make it easy to see out. Another great thing about the X5 is that BMW made the inside look unique and beautiful by using high-quality materials and LED ambient lighting.

How does the tech work? People don’t really have any problems with this tech tool, even though it can be hard to use at times. Bright colors and deep blacks make the screen look great and work quickly. The optional Bowers & Wilkins speakers are better for serious audiophiles, but the sound system in our test car was fine for most people. It’s easy to connect to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay wirelessly, and they both worked great while we had the X5.

It might still feel weird to talk to your car, but BMW has one of the best voice control systems, so you should use it. It can do things like open and close the windows, change the temperature, and turn on and off the head-up display. This is helpful because many of these choices are hidden in a menu on the screen.

The X5’s driver aids are still some of the best out there. Lane-keeping assist is useful and often used on roads. On city streets, however, it doesn’t try to take your hands off the steering wheel. Back-up cameras, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot recognition are all great tools. The main thing we don’t like about the Driving Assistant Professional package is that it only works up to 40 mph and doesn’t give you much of a heads-up when you can’t drive hands-free anymore.

How are things with the storage? Its smart clamshell trunk opening and large, flat storage area make it perfect for carrying goods. Our tests show that the plug-in hybrid X5’s battery pack doesn’t have a big effect on the amount of luggage it can hold. One of the best choices for cargo rooms is the X5 xDrive50e.

The cabin is big, but there aren’t many places to put your small personal things. While the smartphone tray is helpful, it gets in the way when you’re using the cupholders. The center console box is small.    Even though they’re a good size, door pockets don’t really help you order your small items. The X5, which is a high-end family car, should have more storage space inside.

How much fuel does it use? Hybrids are usually thought of as fuel-efficient, but the xDrive50e we tried got about the same average mpg as the six-cylinder X5 that came before it. The EPA says that the X5 xDrive50e we tried will get 22 mpg in the city and on the highway. The average gas mileage we got with our test car was 23 miles per gallon.    The EPA says that it can go 39 miles in EV-only mode after being fully charged. Given how big and heavy the X5 is, this is really amazing. As long as you don’t need to use the EV range very often, the regular X5 with the six-cylinder engine will still get great gas mileage.

Should you pay that much for the X5? While it’s true that you get what you pay for, it’s hard to say that the X5 is a good deal. The build quality is great, and the inside is made with high-quality materials. The panels inside don’t squeak every once in a while. BMW’s guarantee is about the same as those of its rivals. Customers will be covered for four years and 50,000 miles on both the basic parts and the engine. You will also get free maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, as well as roadside assistance for four years, no matter how many miles you drive.

You’ll be happy to drive one of the best-built and most thoughtful SUVs on the market, even if you don’t know it. People who often drive short distances and have a charging station at home will love the plug-in hybrid form. There is a reason why there are so many X5s out there.

The xDrive40i is our favorite BMW X5 type. It has an inline six-cylinder engine that runs smoothly and has a lot of power. It also has all-wheel drive for bad weather and gets good gas mileage for a car its size. It also comes with many functions and upgrades that you can choose from.
