One of the few SUVs on the market right now is the Land Rover Discovery. The Discovery is known for being able to go where other cars can’t, but it also has a high level of luxury and technology. Even though Land Rover’s other models, like the luxurious Range Rover, the stylish Velar, and the tough Defender, get more attention, the Discovery is still an excellent three-row family SUV.

For the 2023 model year, Discovery’s standard and optional features will change in several ways. The limited-edition Metropolitan Edition trim, the most expensive model in the Discovery series, is the most noticeable upgrade. Based on the R-Dynamic HSE specification, it gets several standout features, such as unique 22-inch wheels, great external embellishments, a head-up display, ventilated front and rear seats, and heated and ventilated middle and rear passengers. Now, adaptive cruise control comes standard on all models, and by the end of the year, all models will have a digital instrument cluster that can be rearranged.

Some cars that compete with the Land Rover Discovery are the Acura MDX, the Audi Q7, the Mercedes-Benz GLE, and the Volvo XC90. 

What do they like to live with?

In our long-term road test, we drove a 2017 Land Rover Discovery for a year and 21,000 miles to see how we liked it. It has regular updates, prices for maintenance, real-world data on fuel economy, and much more.

The way the Discovery is driven. Expect performances that are good but need more inspiration. It took the Discovery 6.7 seconds on our test track to go from 0 to 60 mph, thanks to its six-cylinder engine. This is slower than rivals like the Audi Q7. The Discovery doesn’t move very quickly when your foot hits the gas, but it has a lot of smooth, easy-to-use power in the middle range that makes it easy to pass on the highway.

Starting with how hard it is to control, several things make Discovery look bigger than it is. Since Disco’s centre of gravity is high, it means a lot when you drive through tight turns.

On the other hand, the Discovery is very good at going off-road. It has several traction modes, an optional two-speed transfer case, and a maximum ground clearance of 11.1, which is high for a three-row SUV, to help you get over rocks and ruts.

The Discovery is comfortable all around. Even though the seats in the first and second rows don’t offer much support for your thighs, they are well-shaped and won’t break after a few hours of driving. The four-zone temperature control system lets you heat or cool the cabin to your liking while keeping it very quiet. One thing we didn’t like about the Discovery was that its standard air suspension sometimes made the ride floaty.

Let’s start with the new entertainment system, which is much easier to use than what was on the Discovery before. The climate control system is ingenious because it puts the temperature of the fan, the speed of the fan, and the heating and cooling of the seats all in one knob. It’s also easy to see the front and sides.

The Discovery’s updated technological features are a significant improvement over the model for 2017–2020. Songs that can make vibrations or noises in less capable systems are played here in a way that is true to the original. This makes the price of the optional Meridian sound system well worth it. The navigation system is usually easy to use but has some oddities (the predictive text algorithm makes some extraordinary selections). It works with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and several USB ports are inside. The Discovery has many advanced safety features that come as standard, like a 360-degree camera, and help you stay in your lane.

The Discovery’s dual-load door is excellent, and the short bottom part keeps your groceries from rolling out when you park on an incline in your driveway. Unfortunately, there are only 6.1 cubic feet of terrible cargo space behind the third seat. When the seats in the third row are folded down, Discovery has a little more space than its competitors. When the second row is lowered, the Discovery can hold 73 cubes. This has about the same space as the Audi Q7 and Acura MDX. There is much room for small items in the large door pockets and the sizable underarm basket in the front. There is even a tiny space under the panel that controls the temperature.

If you plan to tow, keep in mind that the Discovery has a higher towing capacity than most midsize three-row luxury SUVs. It can pull up to 8,200 pounds when it’s ready.

The turbocharged six-cylinder engine in the Discovery is said to get 22 mpg combined (19 in the city and 25 on the highway). In our real-world tests, the Discovery got 21.7 mpg, which is about the same as the Audi Q7 (21 mpg) and the BMW X5 (21 mpg) (21.5 mpg).

For a midsize luxury SUV, the Discovery is a good deal. A new car starts at about $55,000, but our R-Dynamic S test car, which had a better engine and other features, had a sticker price of about $73,000. A similar Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 costs the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 each a few thousand dollars more expensive than the Discovery. Much cheaper. The materials inside the Land Rover are of the highest quality, and during our test, we didn’t hear any cracks or noises.

The Land Rover warranty is about average. It covers everything from bumper to bumper and the engine for four years or 50,000 miles. Roadside assistance is the same way. Many of your rivals are kinder than you. Also, Land Rover only offers maintenance for a fee.

Even though the Discovery’s slow handling makes driving less fun, this large crossover is nice when you’re just going straight. Even though it doesn’t move this lug as quickly as some other engines, the six-cylinder engine is a treasure. The Discovery is beautiful on the outside and the inside and Land Rover has done a great job keeping this old SUV looking fresh.

We recommend the R-Dynamic HSE trim, which comes standard with a six-cylinder engine with a turbocharger (P360). The HSE has some nice extras that the lower grades don’t have, like better leather upholstery, front seats that are heated and cooled, and an upgraded 15-speaker Meridian audio system. You can also add things like the Towing package and the Advanced Off-Road Capability package, as well as other features that don’t come with a box.

Different kinds of Land Rover Discovery

The S, the R-Dynamic S, the R-Dynamic HSE, and the Metropolitan Edition. Depending on the trim level, you can choose between a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 296 horsepower or a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with 355 horsepower. Seven people can sit in the Discovery’s three rows of seats.
