Body-on-frame that makes it last longer and work off-road. The 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine is pretty good, but the hybrid is nowhere to be found. Brings out the third version of GX. Lexus is trying to find a balance between the GX’s high-end and comfortable form and its great off-road abilities. With the 2024 model year, the SUV has gotten better in both of these areas. The GX’s body-on-frame design is similar to a truck’s, but it has been updated with a more modern engine and a fresh look on the outside and inside. Every GX type has four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. The GX can seat five, six, or seven people. The two types that are designed for off-road use advanced technology in their suspension, motor, wheels, and tires that should come in handy when they’re not in a store. The GX model series shows the wide range of features that Lexus wants its updated SUV to have. There are a lot of high-end and high-tech features in every version, but the options that are meant to be the most high-end or capable off-road are at the very end of the range. The two Luxury models have 23-inch wheels, power running boards, a sunroof that can be tinted from clear to dark, and front seats that massage you. The Luxury+ version has a cooler in the middle bench for drinks. Without any extra cost, the Overtrail+ type comes with 18-inch wheels and 33-inch tires. The E-KDSS system has locking center and rear differentials and an electro-hydraulic circuit that disconnects the front and rear stabilizer bars to improve wheel movement. When it comes to size and personality, the Land Rover Defender 110 is the most like the GX. Off-road features are just as good, if not better, than those on the GX, even though it doesn’t have the third row. Aside from that, only a few SUVs are designed to be both luxurious and good at going off-road. But think about the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, which are much less expensive. Pros vs Cons Pros It’s a great mix between comfort and usefulness. It has a unique look and a good cabin. Stays true to its off-road roots. Take away products that are good for everyone. Cons Not good MPG. You can only get one third-row seat, and it’s small and takes up valuable cargo room. Some tools that help you drive may need to be more convenient to use. Performance How does the GX get power? The GX, which had one of the slowest engine/transmission pairs on the market, has been brought back to life with a brand-new chassis and engine. The 10-speed gearbox and turbocharged V6 engine in the GX work well together. In our tests, it took the GX 6.7 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour. You can easily pass slower cars or turn onto a freeway thanks to the powerful engine. All the way around town, it’s also smooth and quick. This very large SUV is challenging to drive. Body roll is obvious when the GX is pushed, but the suspension does a great job of keeping the car from feeling too sloppy or hard to control. Comfort How does the GX feel in your hands? The GX needs to care about how well it handles broken ground. Its suspension does a great job of reducing bumps and keeping the inside quiet. When going very fast, the cabin is very quiet, except for some wind noise that bounces off the tall side mirrors. Most of the seats in the first two rows are soft and firm. But people in the third row have to sit with their knees raised because the bench seat is low to the ground. Interior How is the inside? Given the GX’s size, you wouldn’t think the second row has that much space and the third row is really small. The GX has enough space for five people, but if you need to fit in more, be ready for rude words from other people. Grab bars and running boards on the GX may make it easier for shorter drivers to get in, even though the ride is high. Everything you’ll need to use often is conveniently placed on the GX’s panel. We’re not really interested in the climate settings. The functions are limited on the screen because they are at the bottom, but you don’t have to go through settings to use functions like heating or cooling the front seats. The built-in surround-view camera system comes in handy when parking or going off-road, and most people can see well. Technology What’s wrong with the tech? Many Toyota and Lexus cars now have a leisure system that is quick and simple to use. The maps are slow compared to what you’ll get if you connect your phone and use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay wirelessly. Even though voice prompts work well, they have fewer features than the speech systems in the newest Mercedes and BMW cars. There are a lot of different types of standard driver help systems. However, it can be challenging to use these tools together. For instance, the driver focus monitor is set up above the steering column. The camera can’t see your face, so if you drive with your hand on the wheel, you’ll get updates all the time. Also, you can only drive hands-free at low speeds of up to 25 mph. Because of the large amount of traffic, it keeps turning on and off. It’s less convenient to use than just having your hand on the wheel. Storage What’s going on with storage? The three-row GX models only have 10.3 cubic feet of storage room when all the seats are folded down. When the third row is split in half, the volume goes up to 40.2 cubic feet, which is more useful. Getting rid of the second row gives you 76.9 cubic feet. The two-row Overtrail trims, which don’t have a third-row seat, have a lot more room for cargo. The only bad thing is that the high load-in height in the baggage area can make it hard to bring bigger things up there. If you choose the chilled center console, you won’t be able to store small items because the storage bin is smaller, but it can still hold three or four cans of your favorite cold drink. The door bags are big enough, but there are only a few places to put anything else in the front of the car besides a phone. Fuel Economy How much fuel does it use? The GX’s full-time 4WD system and engine make it less fuel-efficient; the EPA says it gets 17 mpg (15 city/21 highway). The higher economy of 19.8 mpg we got on our real-world test route was better. However, if you want to drive the GX off-road, those numbers will drop by a lot. Value Is the GX worth it? The GX is a very nice off-road vehicle because it is well-built and has a level of fit and finish inside that is comparable to a Lexus. The prices of the Overtrail versions are a surprise since there are cheaper ways to drive in the dirt. On the other hand, the GX will look like a good buy if you want an SUV with a lot of style and class. Wildcard We usually think of something other than Lexus as having the most stylish looks. On the other hand, the GX is just as good to drive as it looks. With its easy-to-use engine, it makes a lot of power. The Overtrail models are designed to be great off-roaders without sacrificing comfort or on-road skills. You’ll be excited to drive every time you get in the GX. What is Invoice Pricing's Recommendation? A lot of features come standard on the base GX Premium trim, which should make it appealing to most people in this market. There is a 14-inch tablet infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that can be used wirelessly. Pick the Overtrail trim if off-roading is what you’re most interested in. It has smaller 18-inch wheels, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and a rear differential that locks. Types of Lexus GX It has six trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail, and Overtrail Plus. The 2024 Lexus GX is a medium luxury SUV. It only comes with a 3.4-liter turbocharged V6 engine that makes 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Every model level comes with a four-wheel drive. 2024 Lexus GX Video Review
