With the addition of a third row, the Outlander is now one of the smallest SUVs that can seat seven people and still have a footprint that is almost the same as the most famous and best-in-class two-row SUVs. The Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5 all have the same 106-inch wheelbase as the Outlander, but none have a way back seat. The Outlander might be the best option for prominent families with younger kids, but full-size people can only fit in the back for trips a few miles. The engine is worth more because it has a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

The Outlander isn’t for everyone, but could be right for you. There are a few other options in this price range if you need room for seven people, two of whom must be small children and the peace of mind with an extended warranty. The Outlander has a lovely interior, with quilted leather seats and a touchscreen entertainment system that is surprisingly big (9 inches). From behind the wheel, the Outlander doesn’t impress but doesn’t make a fool of itself when the road turns. The only small SUVs with three rows are the Mitsubishi Outlander, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Kia Sorento. In this area, you have a lot of choices if you can handle five seats. Our best options are the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Mazda CX-50.

How does the Outlander move? The Outlander has a flaw in its power plant. Even though the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has enough power for most driving situations, it lacks punch. At the Invoice Pricing test track, our all-wheel-drive Outlander took 9.7 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. You’ll notice this when trying to pass on the highway because the speed is plodding. On the other hand, a Honda CR-V can go from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds.

Other than that, the Outlander is a nice person. The body stays calm when going fast around mountain turns, and the steering wheel has a good amount of weight to it. Even though the Outlander isn’t as fun to drive as the Mazda CX-5, it can still take turns without making your passengers feel sick.

Is the Outlander comfortable? The Outlander is easy to drive on many different kinds of roads. Also, the front seats are very well padded, so people will be comfy even on long trips. We like that the Outlander is one of the few cars in its class with climate control for the backseat guests. When the heated seats are turned up, they get pretty hot. When you drive fast, you can hear the engine noise, which can happen often based on how you drive or how high the road is. Wind and noise from the road don’t worry me.

How does the inside look? The inside of the Outlander is like the inside of the Nissan Rogue. Since there are many ways to change the driver’s seat, both tall and short drivers should be able to find the best position. On the other hand, the front passenger seat can only be moved forward and back, and its back angle can’t be changed.

It’s easy to get into and out of the front seat, but people may have trouble getting into the back seat. Because the bench seat is high, you’ll likely have to crouch to avoid hitting your head. The first and second rows have a lot of space, but the third row has very little room for your legs. Anyone more significant than a child can’t use it.

How good is the tech? The touchscreen options are straightforward to use. The Outlander’s built-in guidance system works very well, but it could do a better job of finding places of interest. Even when turned up louder, the Bose luxury audio system sounds good and has less distortion.

Most Outlander trims come with a wireless Apple CarPlay link as standard. That’s a great deal, but when we tested it, we had trouble whenever we tried connecting an iPhone. The infotainment system’s voice controls could be more attractive. They expected a strict command hierarchy to be followed, and during tests, they needed to understand our orders more often.

The Outlander has many high-tech features that make it easier to drive. But we didn’t like how the lane narrowing and traffic-adaptive cruise control worked. On the highway, Outlander’s cruise control seemed to slow down, and our drivers worried it wouldn’t respond fast enough to avoid hitting the car in front of them.

What about putting things away? A family of six can’t go on long car trips because there is little room behind the third row. There is a lot of storage space, with 33.5 cubic feet under the second seat. Folding the second and third rows makes more room. One of our drivers could move almost 20 bags of mulch this way.

On Outlander, there are several storage options. The pocket under the arm is a good size, and if your phone isn’t charging, you can use the small tray under the center stack. How well does it use gasoline? The all-wheel-drive Outlander achieves 26 mpg (24 city, 30 highway) according to the EPA. Even though the average of 26.7 mpg on our regular test route was lower than we had hoped, we decided that these results could be used in real life. Three-row SUVs lag behind competitors in every area, while two-row SUVs are often cheaper. The Outlander moves more slowly but uses less gas because of this. The battle is becoming more fair.

Is it worth it to see Outlander? Whether you require the third row influences Outlander pricing. Even though it might be helpful sometimes, people should refrain from using it, especially for short trips. The Outlander costs less than almost every other SUV with two rows of seats.

If you need a third row, the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Volkswagen Tiguan cost about the same.
