You can get the same great engines and suspension tuning in a boxy X3 as you can in a fastback X4. After all, the X3’s roomy interior has more headroom and storage space in the back, and it costs less. But for some people, the clear choice isn’t appealing. That’s where the stylish X4 comes in. The X4 xDrive30i has a 248-hp four-cylinder engine, while the X4 M40i has a 382-hp turbo inline-six engine. Each X4 has all-wheel drive and a leather-lined, business-like interior with room for four (or five if they’re nice). The Mercedes GLC Coupe and Audi Q5 Sportback, which are its main rivals, are more focused on comfort than performance. For people who want to go even further away from reality, we also review the 503-horsepower BMW X4 M. What's New? As of 2025, all BMW X4s have heated front seats, and both the Convenience and Premium models now have remote start. Pros and Cons Pros Good handling when you drive. Fast speed. In effect, it’s a big, fancy hot hatch. Cons Lack of flexibility. Less rear view. It costs more than the X3. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The base BMW X4 xDrive30i has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can make 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Another great choice is the X4 M40i if you want something more powerful. This model’s 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine makes 382 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. It sounds great when it runs, and so does its speed. You will have launch control. Both model levels come with an eight-speed automatic engine that drives all four wheels. It doesn’t matter which X4 you choose; it will be an SUV that handles well and rides smoothly. Safety BMW has a number of technologies that help drivers, but the most advanced one is only offered as an option. The following are important safety features: Automatic emergency brakes and forward collision warning are standard. Standard lane exit warning and help staying in your lane. You can get adaptive speed control. Internal and External Cargo Capacity The X4’s high-end interior is all about clean, modern lines. The middle stack looks like a superhero shield because it sits under a sleek tablet that floats in the air. The X4 has less backspace (35.5 inches) than the X3, which is a more useful car. When you drive the X4, you have to give up some room for your stuff. This model’s trunk space is only 19 cubic feet when all the seats are in place but 51 cubic feet when the back seats are folded down. The X3 is the best in this class, with 29 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 63 cubic feet when the back seats are folded down. Fuel Economy and Actual MPG We found that the X4 xDrive30i got 33 mpg on the highway, which is better than the EPA’s predicted 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. According to the EPA, the X4 M40i gets 26 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city. When we were driving that car, we got an amazing 28 mpg on the highway. Infotainment and Connectivity The X4 has an HD radio and a sound system with 12 speakers. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are built in, so you can easily connect your phone to the car. The infotainment system includes a 12.3-inch tablet and a navigation system built right in. Range, Charging, and Battery Life On the track, the X4 xDrive30i went from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, while the M40i did the same in just 4.2 seconds, as shown by our track tests. Price and How to Choose The 30i’s normal turbo four-cylinder engine is strong, but the M40i’s turbocharged inline-six engine is truly amazing. We would choose that type because it gets better gas mileage, and we would add the Premium package to get features like heated seats and head-up displays.
