2025 Toyota Sequoia Overview

What’s new:

  • There will probably be few changes by 2025.
  • Part of the third generation of Sequoia that will come out in 2023.

Crossovers built on cars are the most popular, but for moving people and things, nothing beats a traditional body-on-frame SUV. The most recent big SUV to hit the market is the 2025 Toyota Sequoia. The newest model from Toyota came out a few years ago. It had the most cutting-edge technologies and features to help the driver. This strong SUV can pull up to 9,250 pounds and has room for eight people. It even comes with a strong hybrid engine, so you don’t have to choose between speed and fuel economy.

Big SUVs are known for using a lot of gas, but the Sequoia goes against the grain with its great EPA scores. The Sequoia isn’t quite a three-row Prius, but its basic V6 hybrid configuration with turbocharger makes 437 horsepower and gets 20 or 22 mpg on the highway, depending on whether you choose rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. This usually gives it a few more miles per gallon than other SUVs in its class.

The GMC Yukon, the Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Ford Expedition are all famous models that can carry a lot of weight. We like the Jeep Wagoneer even more because it has many features and a strong turbocharged inline-six engine. The Sequoia is definitely competitive in this class, but it also has some big problems.

Pros

  • The hybrid V6 engine gives off a lot of power.
  • A great group of common and available technical features.
  • It was a smooth ride for an SUV that was built on a truck.
  • The most that can be towed.

Cons

  • Sounds of wind can be heard when traveling at highway speeds.
  • The third-row seat needs to be more comfy.

In what way does the Sequoia move? With a hybrid electric drive and a turbocharged V6 engine, the Sequoia is one of the fastest and most agile big SUVs on the market right now. Our Sequoia TRD Pro test car went from 0 to 60 mph in less than six seconds on the Invoices’ test track. That’s really moving! Even though the TRD Pro has big all-terrain tires that make it less stable on roads, it is still easy and safe to stop.

We were happy with how stable and safe our Sequoia felt when going around turns, given that the model is geared toward off-roading. It’s easy to drive in normal traffic with the Sequoia because it has a quick engine, transmission, light, and accurate handling. It is important to note that the Sequoia TRD Pro is one of the best big SUVs for off-roading.

How does the Sequoia make you feel? Large SUVs with truck bases can do more than smaller SUVs with a single body, but they are less comfy by nature. This is also true for the Sequoia. Its strong rear-axle suspension is great for hauling and off-roading, but it makes commuting in town harder, especially for people in the back seats. Also, the back pillows of both rows of seats are pretty low to the ground, which makes your knees higher than they should be. The good news is that the front seats are more comfy and have strong heating and cooling systems.

The Sequoia’s biggest flaw is its noisy cabin, which makes it less desirable in this group. It’s easier to hear road noise than in some other SUVs, and the engine gets pretty loud when you speed up. We also noticed that the front chairs with airflow had loud fans. Pick a better SUV if you want peace.

How is the state of the inside? Let’s focus on the good things. It was surprisingly easy for even little kids to get into the Sequoia, thanks to its big, squared-off entrances and well-placed step rails. The second-row captain’s chairs make it easy to get to the third-row seats when they are being used, and the grab bars are handy for people who need extra support. The driver’s seat can be adjusted in a way that should make it comfortable for a lot of different types of drivers.

Visibility is good for a big SUV, but there are a few problems. The surround-view cameras were helpful because they showed us how far away things were that seemed closer than they really were, even though the Sequoia had big windows, mirrors, and boxy bumpers. Toyota even adds an easy-to-use button for turning on the cams. It’s easy to use the tools inside.

One bad thing about the Sequoia is that it has less space or ease for passengers than other big SUVs. We suggest the Toyota Grand Highlander as a better choice for families if you don’t need to tow or go off-road as much.

What’s wrong with the tech? The latest Sequoia doesn’t have as many high-tech features as other SUVs in the same class. We had trouble connecting our test car to the internet sometimes when we tried to use Apple CarPlay with our smartphones. The navigation system also had problems that prevented it from connecting to the internet. There were only a few of these problems, but they made us worry. The sound system only did so much else that impressed me besides playing music clearly. One regular wall plug and a wireless phone charger were inside our Sequoia TRD Pro’s cabin. There were also five USB ports. It’s good enough, but not as good as what some others offer.

One of the best things about the Sequoia might be its advanced driver aid. For instance, the Sequoia’s adaptive cruise control technology quickly adjusts to the way traffic flows while making acceleration and stopping smooth. The lane-keeping aid does a great job of keeping the Sequoia in the lines if you start to drift.

What’s going on with storage? Note: Some people can’t stand the thought of opening the back storage door. When the seats are all the way forward, the Sequoia has 22.3 cubic feet of space behind its third row. The third row can’t be folded all the way down because of the hybrid battery that needs to be installed under the load floor. In the event that you plan to utilize something other than the third row, the storage area becomes significantly less useful. It’s also hard to store things in the house. A lot of the folding storage nooks and trays need to be bigger to be useful.

Do you have little kids? The second-row captain’s chairs have plenty of room for car seats, and the LATCH mounts are easy to get to. But because the anchor levels are relatively shallow, it might be hard to get it tight enough in a car seat base. In the third row, there are no LATCH bottom hooks. Instead, there is a top tether anchor point for the middle seat back.

One good thing about Sequoia is that it can tow up to 9,520 pounds when fully loaded. That should be enough to pull a few bigger boats and trailers, as well as most medium-sized ones.

How much fuel does it use? The EPA says that the Toyota Sequoia will get 20 mpg when going in both cities and on the highway. That may not sound like very good gas mileage for a hybrid, but 20 mpg is still good for a car in that class, which is known for using a lot of gas. We got 20.1 mpg when we drove our Sequoia TRD Pro on our real-world test route, which means that the EPA figure should be possible.

Just how much is the Sequoia worth? What you look for in an SUV has a big effect on how much the Sequoia is worth. The build quality feels better than in many other big SUVs, especially inside. However, the design puts durability over comfort, which may be different from what people want at this price point. Still, the Toyota feels like it was built with more quality than a lot of other big SUVs. It might be worth buying the Sequoia if you want a good deal that focuses on off-roading and towing. We think only some buyers will, though.

Toyota’s warranty covers the body panels for three years, or 36,000 miles, and the engine for five years, or 60,000 miles, as is usual for this class of car. The hybrid battery is covered for ten years or 150,000 kilometers, and the hybrid parts are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. Also, regular upkeep is free for the first two years.

The Sequoia is a big SUV that could be more useful in many ways, but it’s beautiful to look at and fun to drive. Along with being a beast, the turbo V6 hybrid engine sounds surprisingly good. Many people may decide to buy the Sequoia before even going inside because of how tough it looks.

As of this writing, Toyota hasn’t said anything public about the 2025 Sequoia. Based on the Sequoia from last year, we recommend the base SR5 trim. We’ll change our advice if anything changes. It comes with a lot of great features, like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a digital gauge display. It also has the same strong V6 hybrid engine as the rest of the series. For a more luxurious experience, get the SR5 Premium package.

Models of the Toyota Sequoia

The Sequoia is a three-row Toyota SUV that comes in five trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone. Its 3.4-liter V6 hybrid turbocharged engine makes 437 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. It’s linked to an automatic gearbox with ten speeds. The TRD Pro is the only type without rear-wheel drive; it only has four wheels. All of the others can get 4WD.
