2023 Lexus GX Overview

What’s New?

  • A 360-degree camera system has been added to the Black Line Special Edition model.
  • A Mark Levinson audio system is currently part of the Luxury trim.
  • In 2010, the second version of the GX 460 came out.

The Lexus GX 460 is a luxury vehicle from the past. It’s the same car that came out in 2010, and it has an out-of-date body-on-frame chassis and a V8 engine that isn’t turbocharged. Both of these things are rare in luxury SUVs today. Still, the GX 460 is great off-road because it has these features, a four-wheel-drive system that works all the time and an intelligent suspension. Aside from being able to go off-road, it’s a well-built SUV on the inside and out, with a quiet cabin and easy-to-use controls.

The GX 460 is getting old, which could be better. Compared to modern competitors like the Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Lexus is less comfortable, technologically advanced, or sound on gas. It’s generally not easy to drive, and the space behind the third row for cargo is small and often hard to use. But it could be the right SUV if you are okay with the GX 460’s flaws and how it feels old and looks different.

Pros

  • Off-road capability is excellent in a market where it is rare.
  • Because the seats are up high, you can see the road well.
  • Controls that are straightforward in both their explanation and their operation

Cons

  • The high floor and side-hinged cargo door may make it hard to load cargo.
  • Unappealing seats
  • Inadequate acceleration and fuel economy
  • A rough ride on pavement that is getting worse

What moves the GX 460? The Lexus GX 460 has many great features, but it needs to be revised in some fundamental ways. The GX can feel slow in the city because it has a considerable curb weight, a throttle pedal that focuses on fuel economy, and a transmission that is tuned for speed. The emergency brakes don’t work well either. At 133 feet, it is the shortest in its class for stopping from 60 miles per hour. Thanks to its small turning circle and easy steering effort, moving around at low speeds is effortless.

The GX is easy to drive on and off the road, but the steering is dull and lifeless. With its low-range transfer case, lockable center differential, and KDSS suspension technology, the GX 460 can go confidently off-road. Still, the overhangs are short, and the ground clearance could be much higher. It will be an excellent option for second-time buyers willing to put on excursion bumpers and a lift package.

How is the GX 460 for comfort? The Lexus GX 460 is quiet and has a comfortable ride without being soft or bouncy. Still, cracks and ripples in the road often cause jolts that your passengers may find annoying. Try out the seats before you sign on the dotted line. Everyone has different tastes, but the plank-like bottoms of all the hearts bothered everyone on our team.

Even though the structure of the climate control system is old, it is known to work well—both the front and back seats in the second-row heat and cool. The climate controls for the second row are on their panel, and all three seats have air vents.

How does the inside look? Even though the interior of the Lexus GX looks old, it works well enough. There is usually a lot of room, and finding a good spot to drive is easy. Even though the raised seating position gives a commanding view of the road, getting in and out is much more complicated than in modern SUVs.

This car is easy to park because it has a built-in parking assist and good visibility. The outside mirrors work and are the right size for both on-road and off-road driving.

How good is the tech? Even with a bigger screen and the arrival of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in 2022, the GX 460’s technical features look and feel old. The GX is a technological failure, from its out-of-date driver assistance features to its unbearably uncomfortable trackpad controller and out-of-date map displays. Also, critical off-road features in other luxury SUVs, like terrain management, camera angles, and angle indicators, must be included or available on the top grade as part of an option package.

What about putting things away? Even though the second and third rows of seats can be lowered flat to the floor, the trunk space could be better in its class. Shorter people will find loading more oversized items into this typical body-on-frame SUV hard because the load deck is so high. The street can’t get in because the back door swings out. The maximum weight the vehicle can pull is 6,500 pounds, even though the tow hitch and wiring are dealer-installed accessories and not built-in at the factory.

How well does it use gasoline? Big SUVs can be good on gas in the modern world. Our test GX 460 came close to the GX’s terrible 16 mpg combined fuel economy (15 city/19 highway), which is very low.

Is it wise to buy a GX 460? The GX 460 is made with high-quality parts and by skilled workers. On the other hand, the inside looks at least ten years old. Some buyers like how simple and well-organized it is, but the lack of modernity will likely turn away most of them.

It’s not fun to drive, which doesn’t say much for a boxy SUV that looks like a truck. It’s also quieter and more refined than you might think. But it seems stuffy, stodgy, and hundreds of years old. It’s too late now.

We recommend getting the top Luxury grade of the GX 460 if you want a big, capable luxury SUV. You likely don’t need the base trim; the Premium trim only adds a little more. The Luxury package has a great Mark Levinson sound system, an upgraded leather interior, and an adjustable air suspension that makes the ride more comfortable. You can get the Off-Road option with the Luxury trim if you want to go off-road.
