Our Opinion - 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review

Although the WK2 Grand Cherokee was still a blast to drive, it had one undeniable flaw: it was old. The WK2 Grand Cherokee has finally been phased out after a ten-year run due to the introduction of the WL Grand Cherokee. When it comes to Jeep, we think the company has a winner on its hands.

Why? At the most fundamental level, there is a choice. A three-row, seven-passenger L version of the Grand Cherokee is now available for the first time in the brand’s history. Because of this, it can compete better with some of the most popular SUVs on the market and therefore has a new attraction for families as well. We were impressed by the Grand Cherokee L’s road manners as well as its off-road articulation and traction.

The Great Cherokee’s engineering group placed a high value on off-road capability. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in 3 different 4WD as well as AWD systems, all of which feature an active gear box to enhance traction. Except for the base trim, all models come standard with an 11.3-inch-high air suspension system. Trailhawk is the most capable off-road grade in the lineup, with standard all-terrain tyres, air suspension with anti-sway bar dissonance, skid plates and tow hooks, integrated off-road webcam, as well as rear digital limited slip differential.

In addition, the grand New Cherokee is aesthetically pleasing. Despite its demure and edgy appearance, it has an undeniably alluring quality. Even though the WK2 Grand Cherokee was almost, but not quite glamorous, the WL model in its elevated trims surpasses that threshold. Regardless of model, the grand New Cherokee is packed with a wide range of technology as well as driver assistance features. Autonomous driving systems at levels 2 and 3 are even more advanced, with Jeep promising that if the driver is ready to intervene, they will be available for the Grand Cherokee.

However, despite the fact that the new Great Cherokee is a capable vehicle, the L model’s placement is unique. L is four inches longer than the 3 Durango, but Jeep is still selling a full 3 Wagoneer. Despite the brand’s assurances, we’ll have to wait and see if there is any overlap. In spite of that, the new WL Grand Cherokee is now at least as lovable as any of the previous models that we’ve had our hands on—it has seven grille slots.

When one new Grand Cherokee is released, it’s a big deal. Known as “Truck of the Year” by MotorTrend magazine in 1993, this venerable SUV first appeared on the scene in 1992. Aside from being a familiar name, it’s also known for its off-road capabilities and everyday road manners.

For the 2021 model year, the current fifth-generation “WL” Grand Cherokee will be available in long-wheelbase form for the first time, with seating for up to three rows. A two-row model has also been added to the lineup. WL Grand Cherokee final assembly takes place in Detroit, Michigan.

Pros

  • Electric/hybrid powertrain upgrade.
  • Extravagance abounds in the higher-level trims.
  • There are appropriate 4WD systems available.

Cons:

  • AWD is not included in the base package.
  • It is a middle-of-the-pack interior space

There are three engine options for the Grand Cherokee. An 8 automatic gearbox is standard equipment, regardless of the vehicle’s configuration. RWD models of the Grand Cherokee will be standard, while optional 4×4 and AWD structures will be sufficient to conduct the drivetrain options.

The base model is a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is expected to be similar to that of the destination node, which was regarded at 18-19/25-26 mpg in the city and highway, according to our projections. Despite the fact that this engine comes standard with RWD, it is also compatible with 4WD systems.

For those who want a bigger engine, there will be a 5.7-liter V-8 on hand. It produces 357 horsepower as well as 390 lb-ft of engine power. To keep up with the previous generation’s 14/22 mpg city/highway rating, cylinder deactivation technology is expected to be employed. The V-8 will come with either AWD or 4WD as standard.

At last, the Great Cherokee 4xe is a plug-in hybrid with an all-electric powertrain and a turbocharged inline-4 engine. A total of 375 horsepower is available, with RWD as the default and 4WD as an option. We expect it to get close to the combined 49 mpg-e rating of the next year Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which has the same powertrain combination.

Driver assistance and active safety systems are available on the next year Grand Cherokee. Adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, oblivious monitoring, intersection collision assistance, and rear cross-traffic alert are a few of the safety features that can help you avoid an accident. Level 2 self-driving technology is even available for the Jeep. Night vision cameras as well as a semi-autonomous reverse parking system are among the other high-tech options. There are eight standard airbags in the Grand Cherokee.

Five passengers can ride in comfort in the Grand Cherokee’s two rows, while six or seven travellers can ride in comfort in the Grand Cherokee L’s second row, depending on whether or not captain’s chairs are installed. The first two rows of seats have similar headroom as well as legroom measurements across models.

The front-row headroom in the Great Cherokee is 39.9 feet, which is extremely similar to the 39.8 cm the next year Chevrolet Blazer provides without a sunroof. The Jeep has 39.4 inches of second-row headroom, while the Chevy only offers 38.6 inches.

Front legroom is also an advantage for the 2022 Grand Cherokee, which has 41.3 inches of legroom compared with the Blazer’s 41.0 cm. However, the Jeep’s 38.2 cm of 2nd row legroom falls short of the Chevy’s 39.6 centimetres of legroom.

The Grand Cherokee’s cargo capacity is 37.7 cubic feet when the second-row seats are folded down. When the second row is folded flat, total cargo volume rises to an impressive 70.8 cubic feet. The 2021 Chevy Blazer, on the other hand, has 30.5 cubic feet of space behind the back row as well as 64.2 cubic feet of largest cargo space.

Up to 6,200 kilos can be towed by V-6-powered Grand Cherokees. The 7,200-pound towing capacity is available to those who opt for the V-8 engine. It is expected that even the 4xe PHEV designs will have towing capacities of up to 6,000 lbs.

All Great Cherokee models come equipped with Jeep’s Uconnect 5 touchscreen infotainment, which utilises a touch interface trying to measure 8.4 or 10.1 cm in size, depending on the model. Wifi Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto, as well as Amazon Alexa support, are included in the standard package of features. An in-vehicle wireless network and Bluetooth connectivity are available for two devices at the same time. With over-the-air updates, the available infotainment and navigation system always has the most up-to-date information.

A 10.3-inch digital evaluate display is included as standard equipment on the Grand Cherokee. The Great Cherokee has six Micro usb and type-C ports, as well as a wireless charging pad. A digital  rear view, head-up showcase, 360-degree camera system, as well as headliner-mounted camera systems that provide a perspective of the rear seats are among the premium technology features available. Depending on the trim, a 19-speaker McIntosh top quality audio system is available as an option or standard equipment.
