The Toyota C-HR, which will be in its sixth year of production by the time 2023 rolls around, is one of Toyota’s crossover SUVs. It is the cheapest and most compact of the company’s offerings. Even though Toyota hasn’t said much, we don’t think there will be any significant changes until 2023. Typical conditions would call for a redesign, but Toyota’s recent release of the Corolla Cross makes things more complicated by putting the two models in competition.

The C-HR seems old compared to other cars in its class, like the Corolla Cross. It starts at a higher price than its competitors, and it doesn’t have many features we’d expect from an SUV in its class. The outstanding options are the Volkswagen Taos, Mazda CX-30, Kia Soul, Chevy Trailblazer, and Kia.

How do you move the C-HR? When a car is as slow as the Toyota C-HR, it’s hard to recommend it. The C-four-cylinder engine in the HR doesn’t have enough power to move the car forward robustly. We reached 60 mph in 10.6 seconds at InvoicePricing’ test track. Some small crossovers and hatchbacks can go faster. Even more slowly than a Toyota Prius.

But in other areas, the C-HR does a great job. At low speeds, the steering is easy to move around and accurate, and the brake pedal is easy to use, so you can stop cleanly. Even though the C-HR doesn’t have much grip, driving it down a winding road might be fun.

How easy to drive is the C-HR? The HR’s C-seats are comfortable and well-cushioned, and the suspension smoothes out most of the bumps in the road. Whether driving or riding in the car, the inside is an excellent place to be.

Still, the C-HR is not meant to work in less-than-ideal situations. We noticed that more prolonged stretches of uneven pavement could quickly rough the ride and make much noise inside the car. The building isn’t very good at blocking noise, so anything louder than a light breeze can be heard inside.

How does the inside look? The C-elevated HR seat position makes it easy to get in and out. There is also a lot of room for the head up front. Adults of a standard size can sit comfortably in the back seats, but the wide roof pillars in the back may feel tight.

The way C-straightforward HR’s controls are set up is excellent, and most of the primary buttons are easy to use. But using some more advanced features, like adaptive cruise control, takes more work. The windows on the C-front HR are pretty straightforward, but the giant roof pillars in the back make it hard to see what’s behind you.

How good is the tech? The touchscreen on the C-8-inch HR is easy to read and use to change settings. It works with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on smartphones and has a reliable navigation system. The sound system is transparent, but as the volume goes up, the excellent quality steadily gets worse. This is especially true for songs with a lot of basses.

All C-HR models come with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite, which has driver safety features we like. Even though the lane-keeping alert system may be too harsh when driving on a route with turns, it still works. In areas with a lot of traffic, adaptive cruise control is a great way to keep the driver from getting tired and can stop the car smoothly.

What about putting things away? The C-HR has little space for storage. At 19 cubic feet, the trunk space in the back is about average for the class. When the back seats are folded down, there are only 37 cubic feet of space, which isn’t as much as in other cars. Even though the center console isn’t huge, there’s enough room up front for small things. The cup holders are in strange places and are a little small.

Have you thought about putting kids in the back? Even though there is enough room to install a rear-facing child safety seat without moving the front seats forward, the car seat anchors are not in the best places. Overall, the size and shape of the C-HR are strange, and Toyota left out all its intelligent storage options.

How well does it use gasoline? The EPA says that 27 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway is average for this class. We found that the number was correct, and on our 115-mile mixed-driving test route, we averaged 33.9 mpg, which was better than the number.

Is it fair that the C-price HR has a tag? The C-HR is built well and uses unusual materials for its class. We like that Toyota has many basic safety features and that the first two years of maintenance are free. The C-HR is not as cheap as some of its rivals, though.

Toyota is bold because it has a design that stands out. Most people either like the C-design or hate it. HR’s The rest of the car has style for people who like it, like trapezoid shapes pressed into the roof and sweeping lines on the dashboard. Still, almost everyone will agree that not having enough power can make driving uncomfortable.

When this was written, Toyota had yet to make official statements about 2023. If anything changes, we’ll change our recommendation, but based on the C-HR from last year, we recommend going with the base XLE trim level. Even though the Limited trim has a few extras, the price difference is unfair.

Toyota C-HR model

There are three trim levels for the Toyota C-HR. They are XLE, Nightshade, and Limited. A four-cylinder engine with 144 horsepower drives the C-HR. Front-wheel drive and an automatic transmission that changes speeds constantly come as standard. The C-HR does not have all-wheel drive like some other small crossover SUVs.
