2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Overview

What’s new?

  • The GT 63 and the GT 63 S are back in the lineup.
  • The GT 63 S E is a plug-in hybrid car with a high level of performance.
  • Front-end design revision
  • A first-generation AMG GT from 2016

Mercedes’ largest performance sedan, the AMG GT, and its coupe and convertible versions were taken off the market last year. It’s bigger than the E-Class and the sporty CLS. Still, it’s not as big as the S-Class, the top model. Unlike other Mercedes sedans, which focus more on comfort than performance, the AMG GT has a more aggressive design, a sportier driving experience, and more power. This Mercedes is a fun-to-drive big sedan or “four-door coupe.”

The V8-powered GT 63 and GT 63 S models, unavailable in 2022, will return for the 2023 model year. Even better, Mercedes now has two V8s to choose from. But this V8 is unlike other V8s because it is connected to a plug-in hybrid system that gives it more power. The top-of-the-line AMG GT is now the GT 63 S E Performance, which has an electric powertrain that makes 831 horsepower and 1,033 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes says it can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour in less than 2.9 seconds, making it the fastest AMG GT sedan. As with all plug-in hybrids, the E Performance can go 7 miles on electricity alone (on the European WLTP testing standard). This Mercedes-Benz hybrid was made for speed and not for fuel economy.

The AMG GT sedan is appealing because it has a nice mix of luxury, technology, comfort, and speed. It would help if you also thought about other big, sporty luxury cars. Others, like the Porsche Panamera and BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, have a lot of power, attractive driving qualities, and a lot of comforts. You could also think about the Audi S7 or, if you don’t mind, an all-electric sedan, the Audi e-tron GT.

Pros

  • The V8 models have swift acceleration.
  • E Performance makes a plug-in hybrid with a lot of power.
  • An infotainment system that is easy to use
  • Sports seats are comfortable but don’t squeeze you.

Cons

  • There is little storage space inside.
  • Even on the smoothest pavement, road noise is annoying.
  • Large pillars and small mirrors make pretty big blind spots.

How do you drive the AMG GT? The GT 53 car was put to the test. The engine feels strong, quick, and smooth in the city. All-wheel drive as standard means that the vehicle has a lot of grips. The AMG GT 53 went from 0 to 60 mph on our test track in 4.5 seconds. We’ve looked at the Audi S7 and the BMW 840i Gran Coupe, both sport sedans with six cylinders—the automatic transmission shifts quickly when you need to go down a gear. It shifts smoothly when you don’t need to go down a load. The stop-start system for the engine on the GT 53 is also separate.

But the GT 53’s other parts need to live up to the engine’s impressive performance. Every car in this class is big and heavy, but the Porsche Panamera and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing hide it better than the GT 53. Even though the suspension helps with flat corners, the handling isn’t as good as expected from a great sports sedan. Even though the brakes seemed fine for everyday driving, they didn’t work well in our emergency stopping tests. Another problem is that it has a big turning circle, which makes it hard to make tight U-turns.

How lovely is the AMG GT to ride in? We’d rather have a performance sedan with a more comfortable suspension than the AMG GT 53. Even though the car is more comfortable on smooth highways, it makes more road noise than the Audi S7 or BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. We also don’t like how much wind and traffic noise there is. At the very least, the tone of the inline-exhaust six sounds great.

Our test car had an option for AMG Performance seats. Even if you pay extra for the adjustment package, the cushions are thin and only do a little to help you adjust. The back has heated and cooled bench seats. They are trying to get extra money out of us. Still, the front buckets are comfortable, and the back buckets have good padding.

How does the inside look? The infotainment system in the Mercedes-Benz GT 53 was just updated, but it is the same one that has been in other Mercedes-Benz cars for a long time. Because the technology is so advanced, the learning curve may be steep. Use the touchscreen or the touchpad on the center console to move through the options. There are also a lot of physical buttons that you can use to get to media or get around quickly. Some of the buttons on the center console also work as small screens. They look great but go away entirely if you put on polarised sunglasses. Also, the gear shifter is in an awkward place.

Also, getting in and out can take time and effort. Because the roof is low and the doorways are vast, you must duck and step in awkwardly. The Performance seats in the car we tested made it even harder to get in and out. While sitting, the driver’s position is low, which may not be to everyone’s taste. Because of this and the small windows, it’s hard to see outside the car, even with the help of the better surround-view cameras.

How good is the tech? Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system makes the AMG GT 53’s navigation system one of the best ones on the market today. The map is clean and easy to read because it doesn’t have a lot of extra stuff on it. There are many ways to give instructions, from the touchscreen to the “Hello, Mercedes” voice command system, which is very good. Voice commands are great in general. You can use them to change the radio station, the temperature or even have your car tell you a joke. Even though neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto has wireless connectivity, both come as standard. The vehicle has a wireless charging pad, which is hidden between the cupholders. In each row, there are a few USB-C ports.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 has many features to help the driver, but most of them must be ordered as options, either on their own or as part of more extensive packages. Our car also had adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, and help to stay in our lane. Even though we were worried that the traffic sign recognition would slow the car down too much, most of the time, it worked great.

What about putting things away? Mercedes says that the AMG GT 53 looks like a coupe, but it doesn’t have the storage space of a coupe. The GT 53’s rear hatch is a huge plus. Even though it has less trunk space than cars similar to coupes (12.7 cubic feet), the area is big and deep. The biggest problem is the big bumper in the back, which makes it hard to put things in the back.

The door pockets and center console are about average for the class regarding storage space inside the car. The cup holders need to be fixed. They are too deep for shorter cups and can tear the lid off a small cup of coffee if you aren’t careful. When you use them, they also completely block the wireless charging pad.

Does anyone live there? Because the door sills are wide and the roof slopes, it may be hard to install taller car seats. The anchor points are clear, but the seat bolstering makes them hard to see. The bucket-style seats may also make installing a safety seat for your child harder.

How well does it use gasoline? The EPA says that the AMG GT 53 gets 21 mpg on average when driving all over. It reached 22.4 miles per gallon on our 115-mile test loop. This is better than its competitors with V8 cylinders but worse than most with six cylinders, which cost much less.

Is the price tag on the AMG GT fair? The GT 53 looks like a Mercedes-Benz, for better or worse. Inside are soft leather seats and beautiful wood trim that make it look lovely and well-made. Our test car was well-equipped, with forged alloys, a performance exhaust system, AMG Performance seats, and driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control. Yet there is a cost associated with all of this. BMW, Audi, and Cadillac have V8 engines that give them more power and better performance for much less money.

Mercedes offers its class’s average basic, powertrain, and corrosion warranties, four years and 50,000 miles. It doesn’t come with free maintenance as some competitors do, but it does cover roadside assistance for four years or 50,000 miles.

The AMG GT 53 has a strong engine and is easy to drive. The problem is that other Mercedes sedans are the same in this way. The GT 53 is less unique because the E-Class and CLS have the same features and perform at the same level. Even though it looks good from the outside, it doesn’t stand out among Mercedes cars.

That might be fine if driving were more fun. Don’t get us wrong, though: the GT 53 is fast and agile. It is not as quick or agile as some of its rivals. Some automakers make their sports cars feel lighter and smaller than they are. All of them are big, but not all of them think big.

In the AMG GT line, the GT 53 is the best car. It has much more horsepower than most people need and costs much less than V8 models. The driving Help package is a great addition that will make driving much more fun. Active multi-contour front seats with massage are a different option that will make long drives more comfortable.
