However, they are just as luxurious as the 3-series sedan. The 4-series tries to stand out from its 3-box brother by having a different grille design than the 3-series, but the result is a look that people either like or don’t like. The base model of the 4-series is the 430i and the more powerful M440i, which is also a good choice. While they are all nice cars, they need to handle the earlier generations of BMW’s entry-level luxury cars as well. The 3-series is one of the best cars in its class, but the 4-series models we’ve driven haven’t been as fun. Because of this, there are better two-door cars on the market, like the Audi A5. The 4-series is still competitive in its class thanks to its luxurious cabin and strong turbocharged engines. If you want a car with four doors but like the way the coupe looks better than the sedan, look at the 4-series Gran Coupe, which we review separately. What's New? The 2024 4-series has been upgraded with a 12.3-inch digital gauge panel and a 14.9-inch infotainment display. The new digital displays come with the most up-to-date iDrive 8 software already installed. This software features new menu designs, images, and voice command features. A new toggle shifter is also available on the center console of all cars. Pros and Cons Pros Better handling while driving. Better facts. Gran Coupe door that makes sense. Cons I am still getting used to the face. It’s stiff to drive in M Sport. The interior could be more inspiring. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The four-series has the same two over-the-top engines as the three-series. The 430i models have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower. With a 48-volt hybrid system, the 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine in the M440i makes 382 horsepower. It’s very smooth. The 4-series sedan is more sporty to drive than the 3-series sedan because it has a wider rear track, more aggressive steering tuning, retuned suspension, and a lower center of gravity. Still, after driving the M440i car, we were more impressed by its great inline-six engine than by how well it handled. Our 70-to-0 mph test (149 feet) showed that the Bimmer’s strong brakes worked very well. However, the Bimmer’s remote steering and smooth ride did not please us as much as the M340i sedan. We tested an all-wheel-drive 430i xDrive model and saw that the turbocharged four-cylinder engine had a lot of power. However, other people said the ride was too soft. Safety BMW cars come with a lot of features that help the driver, and you can add more advanced technologies as choices. Please check the websites of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to learn more about the results of the 4-series crash tests. Some important safety factors are: To a large extent, autonomous emergency brakes can detect human drivers. A standard lane departure warning system that keeps you from swerving. You can get adaptive speed control. Internal and External Cargo Capacity People who buy the 4 or 3 series might only notice a big difference between the interiors if they are sitting in the back seat. The main controls, internal materials, and layout of the dashboard in the four-door 3-series look the same. We have noticed, though, that the 4-series feels smaller because its roof is lower. One less than the 3-series sedan, we were only able to fit five carry-on bags in the coupe’s trunk during our tests. There is less room in the trunk than in the 3-series, especially in convertible models. Fuel Economy and Actual MPG The EPA says the 430i car with four cylinders will get 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The figures for gas mileage drop to 24 and 33 mpg, respectively, when all-wheel drive is added. The M440i has six engines and gets 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Even though we didn’t test the M440i on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route, the 430i xDrive got 34 mpg over 200 miles. Infotainment and Connectivity The 12.3-inch gauge display and 14.9-inch infotainment display in the 2024 4-series are the same as those in the 3-series car. Both panels have touchscreens, which let people interact with the screen immediately. The newest version of BMW’s iDrive eight infotainment software is running on both screens. The software has an easy-to-use interface and a click-wheel controller placed on the console for easy use while driving. You can add on Wi-Fi and a wireless charging pad for your phone, but Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation in the dashboard come as standard. Price and How to Choose Fans are likely to choose the M440i model’s turbocharged inline-six, but the more than $11,000 price difference may keep some people from buying it. For those who need more proof of the price increase, it comes with a bunch of new features. The M440i comes with a sports suspension and rear differential, 18-inch M Sport wheels with run-flat tires, a faux leather center panel, and more. There is also a convertible version, but the base price goes up by $7500 if you choose the soft-top body style.
