2023 Jeep Cherokee Overview

The Jeep Cherokee is a crossover SUV with two rows of seats. The Cherokee, one of the oldest cars in its class, got the last update it needed in 2014. Even so, Jeep hasn’t let the Cherokee get worse. It recently got new trims, features, and a slight facelift. Last year, the Cherokee’s trim lineup was changed, and some models came with more standard features. Even though Jeep hasn’t made any official changes for 2023, another update or a complete redesign may be on the way, given how old the car is. If the Jeep Cherokee is redesigned from the ground up, we expect it to offer a hybrid drivetrain, maybe even a plug-in hybrid.

Almost every car company has at least one small crossover on the market. InvoicePricing likes the roomy and comfortable Honda CR-V, the fast and surprisingly luxurious Mazda CX-5, the recently redesigned Nissan Rogue, and the tried-and-true Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester.

Even though Jeep has a long history of off-roading, we were pleasantly surprised by how athletic the Cherokee is. The steering feels precise and well-balanced. It also lets the driver feel some of the surface of the road. The wheel feels balanced and proper in the middle. We don’t like how slow the nine-speed automatic shifts, so we’d choose the turbo 2.0-liter engine instead, which is better than the V6.

To reach a safe and reliable halt, press the brake pedal. When driving every day. Off-roading is also above average because there are different trim levels and levels of off-roading ability.

The Cherokee does a great job of smoothing out rough roads, but it needs help controlling the ups and downs of more rough routes. Even though they didn’t have a lot of side support, the seats were comfortable, and the upholstery was nice and breathable. Even though the noise from the road or wind isn’t loud enough to be bothersome, it’s not exactly quiet either.

The climate control system keeps the temperature stable, and it’s easy to find and use the controls. Some features, like the seat and steering wheel heaters, are on the touchscreen and require an extra step. This is a nice touch. The seat heaters warm up very quickly as well.

There is plenty of headroom, and getting in and out of the high cabin is easy. The back view is clear, and there are fewer blind spots because of the large amount of glass and the small windows on each side of the back. Also, the seat height can be changed in many ways, so it should work for all drivers. Backseat passengers will like how much legroom there is.

This Jeep is easy to use and understand because it has a simple Uconnect infotainment system, large knobs and buttons that are easy to hold, and easy-to-use controls. People who have trouble seeing might like the 8.4-inch screen better.

Even though the icons are on the small side, the entry-level infotainment interface is good, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. An intuitive touchscreen interface makes it simple to give instructions to help you find your way around the different commands. You can use voice commands to make phone calls, change the radio station, and even change the environment. There are two USB ports in the front, and in the back, there are two more charging ports. The sound from the updated audio system is also excellent.

Even though our test vehicle didn’t have many driver’s aids, some of them, like the blind-spot warning, could be set only to be audible or only be seen. Adaptive cruise control and help staying in your lane are only on the higher grades.

Even though the trunk isn’t huge, its setup is creative and valuable. Even though the Cherokee’s load floor is easy to move and its liftover height is OK, it has one of the smallest trunks at 24.6 cubic feet in the segment. People usually bring a lot of things into the cabin, so there are a lot of places to put them.

There are easy-to-find child safety seat anchors between the back seatback and the bottom cushion. The rear ropes on the back of the seats are also easy to get to. With the help of an optional tow kit, Jeep Cherokees have a maximum towing capacity of 4,500 pounds.

Our V6 test car only gets 22 mpg (19 in the city, 27 on the highway), which is a lot less than what competitors offer. Over two weeks, we got an average of 20.9 mpg. On our 115-mile evaluation loop, we got the most miles per gallon at 25.2 mpg. The optional 2.0-liter turbo engine is more fuel-efficient and makes more power.

Even though our middle-level Cherokee model didn’t have the most polished interior, things were alright. The knobs are easy to adjust because they have soft stops and knurling made of rubber. Even though the intricate plastic trim feels sturdy, it looks better than what you’d find on segment leaders.

Most of the Cherokees competitors offer basic warranties of three years or 36,000 miles and powertrain warranties of five years or 60,000 miles. Unlike some competitors, roadside assistance is covered for five years and 60,000 miles. The segment leaders have more basic features, but the Jeep has a lot of good options that its competitors don’t have—in the end, getting a Jeep that can do more costs more.

After Jeep’s mid-cycle redesign for 2019, the Cherokee is easier on the eyes, but its design isn’t as bold as it used to be. It’s one of the most capable off-road vehicles in its class, and it’s also surprisingly fun to drive on the road. Because of this, we’d be happy to use it often.

Jeep hasn’t told anything official about the 2023 model as of this writing. If something changes, we’ll change our recommendation, but based on the Cherokee from last year, we still recommend buying the Latitude Lux trim level. It is well-equipped and gives you many options, such as a powerful turbocharged engine.
