2024 Ford Expedition Overview

What’s new

  • In 2024, something meaningful will remain the same.
  • A member of the fourth wave of Expedition ships, which went into service in 2018.

As of 2024, Ford’s biggest and most powerful SUV is the Expedition. It can do much more than big three-row crossovers like the Volkswagen Atlas and Honda Pilot because it is built like a truck. The Expedition can pull up to 9,300 pounds, while the Pilot and Atlas, also unibody cars, can only pull up to 5,000 pounds. The Expedition is excellent if you need a large three-row SUV to pull a large ski boat or a heavy camper.

Despite its enormous size, the Expedition only has a little more space than the giant car-like crossover SUVs. The Ford and vehicles like the Pilot share the room for the second and third rows of seats. This is true even for the Expedition Max with the long wheelbase, which doesn’t have a more prominent seat but has more space behind the third row for goods.

The Expedition resembles the big Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, Jeep Wagoneer and Wagoneer L, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia if you don’t need the ability to tow that the Expedition and its rivals with pickups offer, look at the Pilot, Atlas, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Telluride.

Pros

  • A big area with lots of room for people and things.
  • The strong V6 engine lets you move quickly.
  • People usually have big TVs, but you can order even bigger ones.
  • Tows more than SUVs of the same size.

Cons

  • In real life, more than fuel economy is needed.
  • Because it is big and turns slowly, it is hard to drive.

How is the Expedition moved? V6 engine power is remarkable. This large SUV can’t go this quickly, right? We tested a 4WD Expedition Platinum that reached 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. That beats a Chevy Tahoe of the same size by almost a second. The Expedition is fast and easy to drive without the gas pedal.

When you first step on the brake pedal, it feels soft, but once you get used to it, it’s easy to come to a smooth stop, which is all that counts. This Expedition feels less significant because it is easy to turn the wheel.

Even though you won’t be driving your Expedition as quickly as the Secret Service, it has some good features for such a big SUV. Even though it’s not a Mercedes GLS, it doesn’t look strange.

How does the Expedition feel? The front seats of the Expedition are nice and warm. In the better trims, they even have a massage feature and more than one place to support your back. The second row of seats is also pretty comfy. Even though the seats in the third row are hard, adults can use them. The ride is also very smooth in the Expedition.

The temperature setting on the Expedition did not impress us. The airflow from the vents is loud and doesn’t do its job. You may be let down if you think the seat heaters will heat up quickly. On the plus side, the Expedition is quiet both in town and on the highway.

How’s the inside? The Expedition uses every inch of its interior. Because it’s bigger than the Chevy Tahoe, everyone has room and comfort. Adults can enter and exit the third row swiftly; it requires less effort than the second row.

There are a lot of buttons on the center panel. Even though it’s not apparent at first, it’s not hard to learn. Also, the structure is easier to understand than that of the Tahoe. The big beams in front of the windshield make it hard to see the show. Even though the back window looks miles away, it’s easy to back up thanks to a clear backup camera and an available 360-degree camera system.

How good is the tech? The latest version of Ford’s Sync entertainment system is straightforward and shows much progress. Even though the guidance system looks old, it is quick and easy to use because you can pinch to zoom. The 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system in our test car used the Expedition’s large cabin well by delivering both power and clarity.

Voice tools are accessible and effective for simple tasks. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay provide wireless phone-car connections. Adaptive cruise control and other high-tech driving aids in the Expedition operate well but have fewer features than those in comparable SUVs.

Putting stuff away? The Expedition can carry 104.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 57.5 behind the second, and 20.9 behind the second. It has less room than the Chevy Tahoe, the top competitor. But the Expedition’s adjustable seating and extra storage spaces more than make up for that.

The Expedition can also be used to carry small children. It has enough space for seats that face backward and safety seat mounts that are easy to use. When fully equipped, the towing capacity is excellent and can pull up to 9,300 pounds.

Does it use gas efficiently? The Expedition achieves 19 mpg in city and highway driving with rear-wheel drive and 18 with four-wheel drive, according to the EPA. The EPA offers similar data on large SUVs. Our actual testing took a lot of labor to meet EPA values. Another consideration is that the power numbers need premium fuel. Using ordinary gas instead of exceptional changed how the Expedition functioned.

Does it make sense to go on the Expedition? The price of the Expedition is about the same as that of the Chevy Tahoe and other big SUVs. A non-luxury carmaker will often offer a warranty. The inner building quality and materials are slightly better than those of its neighbors across the street.

The Expedition isn’t fun to drive, but using its tremendous torque in the way planned for this huge SUV is exciting. Road excursions, daily commutes, and outdoor outings are perfect for the Expedition.

The Limited has a panoramic sunroof, leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second row, tri-zone climate control, GPS, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 12 speakers. With the Stealth Performance package, You can upgrade to a high-output EcoBoost engine and a sport suspension. However, these upgrades are more expensive and have fewer exterior and interior color choices.

Models of the Ford Expedition

Due to its massive wheelbases, the 2024 Ford Expedition can fit seven or eight people. The basic automobile has five seats and is shorter. XL, XLT, Timberline, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum are the trim levels for the main Expedition and Expedition Max. These cars have rear- or four-wheel drive.
