Our Opinion - 2024 Toyota Sequoia Review

The Sequoia stands out from other big SUVs with V-8 engines because it comes with a standard V-6 hybrid drivetrain that is made to save gas while keeping performance high. The iForce MAX engine, which has 437 hp, is used in both the Sequoia and the Tundra Hybrid pickup trucks. It is strong enough to pull and haul heavy loads. The back seats of the car are big enough for kids to be comfortable, and the inside is nicely equipped with all the usual tech comforts. Getting adults back there is a different story since the third row needs to be bigger. There is little room for goods behind the third row, and it’s hard to make more room in the back because the load floor isn’t level and the lift-over height is high. Put cars like the Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe are more useful and can be used for more things. However, the Sequoia is your best (and only) choice if you want an extra-large SUV with hybrid power.

The Limited Nightshade version, which will be available in 2024, has special 20-inch TRD wheels that are made matte black, along with other parts of the outside that are also black. The Limited had the TRD Off-Road choice last year, and now the Platinum grades can also have it. The package comes with a skid plate, an electronically controlled locking rear differential, an off-road drive mode, a crawl control system, a hill descent control function, Bilstein shocks for the off-road suspension system, and some parts that make the car look different. All black has been added to the outside of special edition models that come with the TRD Off-Road package.

The Sequoia comes with the optional iForce MAX hybrid engine, which is also found in the Tundra pickup truck. This engine and motor pair has a 3.4-liter V-6 twin-turbo engine that makes 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. The Sequoia SUV also has the same 10-speed automatic engine as the Tundra. Even though most versions don’t come with four-wheel drive, the off-road-focused TRD Pro model does. It comes with rear-wheel drive. Sequoia Capstone with four-wheel drive was our test car. It went from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and from 94 mph to 94 mph in 14.3 seconds. The last GMC Yukon Denali we drove was faster, but that is a little slower than the Ford Expedition Timberline. For off-road use, the TRD Pro has front skid plates, locking rear differentials, forged 18-inch wheels with 33-inch tires, and better Fox shocks. Our first test drive of the Sequoia made us happy with how quiet the car was and how smooth the ride was, but not with how well it handled going off-road. We’ve said this about other big SUVs, but this one’s extra-wide view of the road makes it hard to change lanes, and the light handling doesn’t help. The stop pedal also feels spongy for some reason.

The Sequoia comes with all of the driver-assistance features that are offered. Watch the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) websites to learn more about the Sequoia’s crash test scores. Some important safety factors are:

  • Emergency brakes that work on their own and regular forward crash warnings.
  • Regular lane guidance and warnings as you exit.
  • It comes with adaptive speed control.

While this latest version of the Sequoia keeps the big interior, it now comes with a third row of seats as standard. With standard second-row benches, there are eight seats. However, with extra second-row captain’s chairs, there are only seven seats. There is little space in the back rows, especially if you choose the panoramic sunroof. The quality of the indoor furniture gets better as you move up the price range. The furniture can be simple or fancy, with fabric or leather upholstery and different levels of chrome and wood trim. A panoramic sunroof, warm and cooled second-row seats, and a high-end music system are some of the features that come with higher model levels. But the Sequoia’s trunk space is smaller than those of its rivals. When the back seat is in use, the trunk can only hold 12 cubic feet of stuff, and folding down the third row doesn’t make the floor flat for loading.

The new Sequoia is much more efficient than the old one because it has a mixed setup. In cities, rear-wheel drive cars get 21 mpg; on the highway, they get 24 mpg; and in total, they get 22 mpg. The gas mileage drops a little when four-wheel drive is added, to 19 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg total. It only got 19 mpg on our real-world highway test, which we did at 75 mph in our Capstone test car.

The Tundra’s large 14.0-inch display replaced the Sequoia’s old-fashioned touchscreen layout. The base SR5 is the only one without this screen. Toyota’s newest infotainment software will be used. It has a Wi-Fi hotspot, music streaming, and smartphone syncing.

The Limited trim is the best deal out of all the choices. Also, even though it’s similar to the regular SR5, it comes with a lot of extras. A bigger tablet (14.0 inches), a power liftgate, 20-inch wheels, heated and cooled front seats, and a power-folding third row are some of the features that can be added.
