2024 Toyota Corolla Overview

What’s new

  • Nightshade’s Return trim
  • 12th-generation 2020 Toyota Corolla

Last year, Toyota upgraded the Corolla sedan’s safety, entertainment, and engine to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The 2020-redesigned Corolla will mostly stay the same for 2024. The Nightshade trim level is returning. Brass wheels and blacked-out exterior design. Corolla is expected in 2025.

The small Corolla is reliable like its bigger sibling, the Camry. Despite its reliability, it has never been the most entertaining small car. Though competitive, its handling and engine won’t delight driving lovers like a Mazda 3 or Honda Civic Touring.

Unlike its competitors, the Corolla has only one engine. The Honda Civic’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder is faster than the Hyundai Elantra’s standard engine, which uses about the same petrol. This engine gave a 2022 Corolla XSE 40.2 mpg. The Corolla has a continuously variable transmission and all-wheel drive only in the hybrid, which we review separately.

The new Corolla continues its tradition of reliability and utility. If you want a compact, fast car, there are better options.

Pros

  • Simple-to-use tools
  • Comfortable rides
  • High MPG

Cons

  • Gradually accelerate
  • Highway traffic needs to be quieter.
  • Less rear space than competitors

Corolla driving: how? You’ll need to accelerate near roads because acceleration is slightly below average for the class (8.8 seconds to 60 mph in our tests). Avoiding slower autos requires more planning and strength. Brake force is moderate for smooth stops, but emergency stopping is allowed.

The quicker Corolla XSE was tested. Unfortunately, it’s not sporty. It leans and grips poorly around curves. The Corolla is a solid daily driver. The quiet CVT makes city driving easy.

Corolla comfort? The Corolla rides well on diverse roads and has comfortable front seats. Anyone, tall or small, can discover their ideal posture with enough modifications and range. Fabric seats allow more airflow than synthetic leather chairs on hot days.

Road noise is constant. Increase the music to block highway noise. The continuously variable gearbox (CVT)’s virtual gear changes reduce the CVT’s droning sound when accelerating swiftly.

The interior? Corolla interiors are simple. The settings are straightforward and in the right place. There are enough buttons but only a few.

The automobile is easy to enter and exit. The driver has good visibility and comfortable front seats. Back passengers need more space. Adults may look up. Honda Civic excels here.

Tech quality? Toyota’s infotainment systems haven’t impressed us, but this one does. It’s more straightforward and attractive than other ways. Phone-connecting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard.

Toyota Safety Sense offers many high-tech safety measures, most designed to be unnoticed. The lane exit warning system is the lone exception. Adaptive cruise control lets you seamlessly accelerate and decelerate.

Are you storing things? The Corolla has 13 cubic feet less trunk space than its primary competitor. It should work daily. Back seat backs don’t fold flat with the trunk floor. Moving longer or heavier items may be more challenging.

Personal storage is restricted. Other bags hold more than your phone and a few other things. Baby and child safety seats fit. The indicated car seat mounts should make installation easier.

Is it gas efficient? According to the EPA, a 2.0-liter Corolla XSE with a CVT transmission, like the one we tested, gets 34 mpg in the city and on the highway. On our 115-mile test, the Corolla achieved 40.2 mpg. The gas-efficient Corolla Hybrid is best.

Buy a Corolla? Corolla can compete with top small cars. The cabin is well-built. Most car purchasers choose based on historical reliability, but additional factors exist. This class rarely offers free scheduled servicing for two years.

No vents or ornaments decorate the latest Corolla. It’s more fun to drive now, but other cars in its class are more fun. Competence and skill dominate.

The new Corolla’s sleek design ages the old one. More extreme body treatments make the XSE trim better.

Toyota had yet to release the complete 2024 Corolla information at publication. We’ll recommend the LE trim unless something changes. It’s a beautiful deal for a compact car with the latest infotainment and gauge panel.

Toyota Corollas vary.

Corolla trims include LE, XLE, SE, and XSE.
