2022 Toyota Highlander Overview

The all-new 2022 Toyota Highlander maintains the pace with a thrilling new arrival: the sporty XSE shave level, following a complete redesign in 2020 for its fourth generation. When it comes to the Highlander, Toyota has struggled for nearly two decades, but last year’s redesign and the new XSE trim will change all that. For the new model year, we’ll take a closer look at what’s new as well as how the Highlander performs.

Adding the XSE shave level is the only major change for this year’s model. The 295-hp V6 motor that powers the remainder of the models is present in this trim, but there are some significant differences. The newly-returned dampers produce less friction, and the suspension is upgraded. Bigger air ingestion and an upside down grille have been added to the front fascia, giving it a more aggressive look. Two-tone Red/BlackSofTex simulated leather/cloth upholstery, contrast stitching, XSE particular lighting effects, and carbon-fiber trim are found inside.

Only the third-row SUV version of the Toyota Highlander will be offered in 2022.

There are six trim levels for the Highlander in 2022: L, LE, Cope with difficult situations, XSE, Restricted, and Platinum. Every trim level except for the L can be decided to order with a hybrid powertrain instead of the standard gas-only engine.

The gas-only Highlander has a 3.5-liter V6 engine that provides plenty of power. It’s paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which provides smooth shifting capabilities. For those who require the extra better traction that AWD provides, the Highlander’s effectively prevent letting you choose between site make or all-wheel drive.

For a three-row SUV, the Ranger is pretty lightweight on its feet. When equipped with AWD, it can accelerate from zero to 60 miles in just 6.7 seconds. However, unless you can get the XSE, the handling isn’t nimble. The sport-tuned suspension on this new trim level, which includes upgrades to the rear stabilizer bar and the springs, is intended to provide a more dynamic driving experience. Driving the Highlander will be more comfortable, but it won’t necessarily be more exhilarating.

Why not try a hybrid vehicle instead? A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors combine to produce 243 horsepower. Because of the reduced acceleration, this engine is paired with a CVT in order to improve fuel economy. In 7.3 seconds, the vehicle goes from zero to 60 mph.

When it comes to both comfort and technology, Toyota has nailed it. The first two rows of seats offer plenty of legroom and headroom for the driver and passengers. The third row of most automobiles in this class is small and primarily intended for children.

Except for the Restricted and Platinum, which come standard with a 12.3-inch display, all trim levels come standard with an 8-inch infotainment system. To make it simple to connect your smartphone to the car’s infotainment system, all trims come equipped with Android Auto Auto as standard. In addition, a JBL 11-speaker sound system is an option here. Channel keeps assist and fully automated high beam headlights are just two of the features that come standard in the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.

The Toyota Highlander’s hybrid models, in particular, are among the most fuel-efficient on the market in 2022. When equipped with front-wheel drive, the gas engine can achieve up to 21 miles to the gallon in the metropolitan area and 29 mpg highway. Adding AWD will reduce this by a couple of mpg. The Highlander Hybrid can achieve up to 36 city mpg and 35 highway mpg. The EPA estimates are fairly accurate, which means that the Highlander has a significant advantage over other third-row SUVs in terms of fuel efficiency.
